Project #3: Replace Switch and Outlet Covers

Talk about easy fixes! This one will upgrade any room in moments, and all you need are some new light switch and outlet covers that nicely match your decor. And of course a screwdriver. Thats’s it!

We will talk about painting more in later posts. If you are following the house hundred in order, please note that it might make sense to change out these items in a room you intend to paint later when all of that is done. But do what works for you!

I especially love stark white new outlets on bold dark colored walls. That is why I chose this room to start with – once the paint is finished on all of the walls that will be another post in the house hundred. But for now I can reveal the outlet upgrade!

Fancy new outlet covers are here!

House Hundred Project Time!

There are so many styes of covers you can choose from! In this room, the dark blue will be highlighted with some gold, but gold switch plate and outlet covers seemed like way too much! Classic white was going to work best here.

And yes, we do have the older style of outlets and light switches in this room. I would need an electrician to upgrade these, and may do so in the future. But I find charm in this style and especially like the look now as it will go with the room.

So I just counted up the outlets and light switches and headed to the store! I went to Lowe’s, but of course there are lots of options such as local hardware stores!

What did I choose?

I decided on the Brainerd Beadboard Duplex Wall Plate in Pure White for the outlets, and the Brainerd Beadboard Toggle Wall Plates for the switches. Each were about $6 so the whole room cost me about $40 to do. I took a screwdriver and went to work!

The Side-by-Side
Your basic wall plates are a thing of the past. Instant upgrade!

Reality Check!

We actually do have a number of blank wall plates in our house. This has bothered us from the start and we have had many checked for electricity and then plastered over. However, to get this room done I simply upgraded the blank wall plate to match the others, and surprisingly it was not hard to find a blank plate that was at least mildly attractive. This is home ownership – it is not perfect and is always a process!
